The book, 'Broken Silence', was by far one of the best, more realistic books I've ever read. The story is about a girl who grew up being sexually abused by her dad and his friend, from the age of five to thirteen. Through those years Oakley was completely silent and would not talk to anyone until it finally stopped.

Through those years Oakley was completely silent and would not talk to anyone until it finally stopped. The story starts in Australia where Oakley, her mom, and her brother, Jasper, moved from England after Oakley had finally gone to the police about the situation at 16. It's four years later now.
Oakley is still deeply in love with her old boyfriend, Cole, and the trials for her dad and his friend, Frank, would be starting soon. Originally Oakley was going to give evidence to the court through video but now she decided to go back to England and face her fears.
She was afraid of facing her dad in court, but even more afraid of how Cole felt about her anymore. Her mother emailed her best friend, Jenna (Also Cole's Mom), and let her know they were coming back for the trials. Unfortunately, Jenna's internet went down and did not get the message so Oakley and her family showed up unannounced which took Cole by surprise. When him and Oakley talked for the first time he yelled at her for leaving him behind because he would have went with her. She didn't want him to come though, because he had plans to go to the University. Cole was still very much in love with Oakley and eventually they got back together. During the trials Oakley's first time on the stand and looking at her dad for the the first time again she passed out and was taken to the hospital.
She just had an anxiety attack and had a concussion from hitting her head. The trials were rough because they couldn't find the evidence of her dad taking pictures of her on his computer so he tried to convince the jury she was doing it for attention and that's why she mute herself and then came up with this story. In the middle of her giving her evidence though, a man came through the doors and approached the judge. The man had finally hacked into her dad's computer well enough and found the pictures. Eventually, her dad was sentenced to life and Frank changed his plea to guilty and was sentenced 10 years.
After they went home to celebrate the police knocked on the door and arrested Cole because Oakley had to admit that they had sex when she was fifteen. Oakley got the whole town involved and eventually they let Cole go with no charges. Since the trials were over this meant Oakley would have to return to Australia but instead her mom went back to Australia, sold the house, and returned with her new boyfriend, Miles. Oakley moved in with Cole and at the end of the book they were pregnant! Oakley and Cole are the people who tell the story in this book. You see it from both of their perspectives which makes it very interesting. Oakley is a very strong, smart, and brave girl.
She faces her fears by trying to face her dad in court. Although she may have failed the first time she still went back and did what she was there to do.
Cole is a very open person. He likes to joke around and have fun with Oakley. He also is very much in love with her and is deathly afraid of losing her. Jasper is Oakley's brother who happens to be very protective of her, especially after what her dad did. He tries to make himself look good to other people a lot, too.
Jasper had a very hard time controlling his anger while watching the trials. The setting of this book takes place in our era. It was so modern in fact, it mentioned One Direction and Justin Bieber. The story starts out in Australia and eventually moves to England where the trials take place. There Oakley and Cole jump around from Court, to Cole's parents, to Oakley's Aunt Ali and the house the Cole just bought.
I believe the theme of this book is saying that everyone is faced with hard times and tragedies in their lives but that is when you have to look them in the eye and show them you are stronger. In other words, be brave. I would recommend this book to people around the age of 16. Cole and Oakley are in their twenties now so they are a little more mature. It was a very good book and I rated it a five! Thank you for giving survivors of sexual abuse a voice!!! As a survivor of family sexual abuse myself, I really connected with this story!
It was written so well! It seems that the author was writing from personal experience. If not, she really did her research. (although Oakley's thoughts would be difficult to emulate without personal experience). So glad these books were written.it shows that anything that doesn't kill you, makes you stronger.and that even from those bad experiences, good Thank you for giving survivors of sexual abuse a voice!!! I really don't want to be negative, but I found this even more frustrating of a read than the first book. The timing was really. I don't know how to articulate it. Time just seemed to skip ahead in a jarring/ jerky sort of way. There was more poor grammar and quite a few typos, and I could feel myself getting annoyed with the way things played out. There was a lot of melodrama around the court case, where it could have been more effective to show the emotions in a different way. There was a lot of melodrama around the court case, where it could have been more effective to show the emotions in a different way. It really got to me how Oakley's emotions never rang true for me.:/ It's disappointing because this was a great premise, and with more attention to detail, and fleshing out if the characters (giving readers a chance to understand what motivated them) it could have been a lot better. Broken Silence was just not as good as the first book Silence.
In Silence you had the layer of Oakley not speaking to anyone. Well since she spoke at the end of the first book there wasn't that aspect. It was just the trial and Oakley and Cole trying to figure things out.
Really the book seemed like a lot of Oakley and Cole hanging out and a lot of Oakley worrying about the trial. But what if they get off? What if they don't go to jail? I know there is a ton of evidence against them, but what if Broken Silence was just not as good as the first book Silence. In Silence you had the layer of Oakley not speaking to anyone.

I know there is a ton of evidence against them, but what if that is not enough??? It was a little tedious for me at times. As in the first book the writing did not make me connect with the characters as much as it could have. It wasn't horrible, but it was a lot of worrying and not many things happening. Cole was still sweet in this book. At first he is a little hesitant, but they just cannot stay away from each other. Though his momentary issues at the end were a bit much for me, I kind of understand it.
Overall it was just an okay book. The story was a bit tedious at times, but it wasn't all bad. Also posted to. Sadly I was not impressed by this sequel. Silence itself was a frustrating read for myself, concentrating on day to day events and rushing the main issue. Unfortunately nothing has changed in this book.Far too much concentration on Oakley and Cole's feelings for one another than on the trial which should have been the priority.
The relationship between the two main characters do not reflect the 4 year gap, it reads exactly like the previous book. I do applaud Preston for tackling this difficult issue, I do hope it gives others the confidence to speak out, if it does then in my eyes itis a hugely successful book! I thought that this was a fast, ok read but it was just nowhere near as good as the first book in the series. Maybe that is because in Silence there was intrigue as to why she hadn't spoken in over a decade and the book was addictive because you wanted to find out what the secret was. Although this was a quick interesting read, it was obvious where it was heading.

So it would have been more enjoyable if it wasn't completely predictable. Having said that if you liked the first novel Silence you will probably like this book too. When I finished the first book, I wasn't sure whether to read this one. The more I thought about this book, the more I really did want to read it. This is such a beautiful yet sad story. It is not one of those stories where you wish you were that character. It's more like, you wish you had that support and, of course, Cole.

Cole was the best part of the story and quite instrumental to Oakley's recovery. And (spoiler alert for those who never read the first book) despite Oakley leaving for four years to Australia, I think it was the right decision. It gave her perspective; of her father, her family and Cole. In all honesty, I couldn't blame her for breaking off things with him. She was right; in say that she couldn't ask him to move with her.
First, he was underage and it would have uprooted his whole family. Secondly, I think she needed that time apart from him. They have been very close since they were very young. Oakley needed that freedom to think.
And despite all that, her saying he must move on, I would have been devastated if he did indeed move on- to someone else. I keep reading synopsis of books where, boyfriend and girlfriend break up, the guy goes on a mass sleeping-around spree, and that bloody-well annoys the sh!t out of me.
If something like that happened to me, that my ex started sleeping around trying to get over me, and then him wanting to get back together. I honestly don't think I could handle that. If that sounds wrong to you, well, it's my opinion. I don't want to even know, or imagine, what he was doing, especially if I did want him back.
Sleeping around is not the bloody solution. Oh and I wouldn't want the whole fricking world to know about it as well. That's what I loved most about Cole.
He was still in love with her, thought she'd never come back, and yet, he held those so called 'urges' in. Or if he didn't, at least was discreet about it. Love it soooooo much This book is so good. I could not stop reading it. At the beginning of this book I was so entertain. She went back to England. Then in the middle I thought I was going to explode with anxiety.
They kept making wonder if Frank and max are going to get sent to prison or not. Then the end no words. Just writing this and thinking about the end makes me cry. How Cole gets arrested and every one supports him soooooo much.

I love how in the end Oakley and her family build the 'centre' for all of the kids who were like Oakley. The very last chapter(omg I'm crying) is so good.
Why can't there be a million more books about Cole and Oakley. The last 2 pages.no words.that's not how I thought it end.
She is pregnant. Cole mixed with Oakley.don't even get me started. I hope soooooo bad that I will marry someone like Cole.
I know someone named Cole but he is not the same, well he is only in 5th grade so who knows!!!!!!! I would give this book 5 stars because it was so great (tears). I would recommend this book not for boys under 15 and for girls 13 and older. WHY DOES IT HAVE TO BE OVER. That was just 2 books. All the good book series are short and the bad ones are almost always really long!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you find me dead it was because of the ending of this series!!!!!!!!
O O O O O OH my. And I thought the first book was good. But now it is. Whats the word? There is another book, but it isn't from Oakley or Coles point of view. So that leaves me like this: and from me to Natasha Preston: and my overall pain: but all the tears.
Every drop full of happiness. Full of this: THEY ARE GONNA HAVE A BABY!!!! OH MY glOB!!! They will make the perfect little family!! My only problem is that it still O O O O O OH my. And I thought the first book was good. But now it is.

(sorry if you haven't read the first book yet. You shouldn't look ahead)I could see stuff happening with that, but no. And I thought it was a little confusing. LOVE THESE BOOKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This book broke my heart, but also taught me how love can help people find their voice. In the first book, Silence, the story is about a young girl named Oakley who was sexually abused until she was 13 years old.
Due to the abuse, she stopped talking in general, so she communicated by shaking her head and nodding. In this book, it has been 4 years since she left for Australia. She is returning to testify at we father and his friend's trial after she confessed that she was abused.

He was a bit upset, but could not stop loving her. The story was a page-turner, and had me at the edge of my seat the whole time I read it. Oakley is a twenty year old in this book.
Throughout the book, I thought she was brave and did her best to try and move on with her life without all of the baggage. I think that was why she wanted to testify at her father's trial.
I felt bad for her and the horrible events that she suffered through. She was a fighter, smart, and caring. She has a caring older brother named Jasper who I also love. He is so protective of her.
He loves her so much, and it shows that he is not that dumb after all. He just acts that way to give people the impression that he is cool instead of smart. The next book is about his story. I can't wait to find out more about him.
Then there is Cole. Now here is the sweetest twenty-one year old blue-eyed boy I have ever read.
He would do anything for Oakley. He is protective, smart and cute. He is definitely boyfriend material. Heck, I'd even say husband material. He is not afraid to protective Oakley, whether people are bullying her or when she is upset. He is always there.
When I read their scenes together, it showed just how much love they felt. The chapters about the trial made the story more real. I was really heart broken when she had to relive those painful abuse moments especially the part about she being raped at ten years old. Also, I was pissed that her father and his friend Frank only got around ten years imprisonment. I was shocked to find out that Oakley found out that she and Cole were pregnant. I thought the ending was shocking and I can't wait for book 3.
I get to know about Jasper. I get to find out what happens to Cole and Oakley!!
I hope Cole and Oakley get the happily ever after that they deserve. Just like the first book in the sequel, Broken Silence by Natasha Preston is an amazing love story with a big twist. This book is about the trial of Oakley’s dad and his friend for sexually harassing Oakley when she was little. This book is quite different to the first one, as Silence (book #1) was written around Oakley and Coles thoughts, whereas this book is more focused around what is happening and direct speech.

The book starts of with Oakley with her mom and brother in Australia after they have just moved from England, leaving her Cole, Oakley’s boyfriend, behind. Of course this created drama and the book ended just when Oakley tells him she is leaving that day.
This book started off four years later, when the trial was a few weeks away. In this book the story is really developed and you get to know a lot more about each of the characters, more than you did in the first book.
I liked this book more than the first one because I felt that this book had more drama and suspense which I liked. I liked the way the book changes from first person perspective of Cole and Oakley with each chapter as it really gives a different perspective of the same story. I felt this book was quite different to the other one, as I thought it was a perfect love story, with nothing bad happening until the end, however this one is very different. The problems arise from the very beginning and seem to carry out, problem after problem, till the very end.

One similarity between the books is that they both end, leaving me wanting another book in the sequel. It doesn't seem quite finished to me. At the end of this book, she ends up pregnant and so you can kind of make out what will happen however I never like that feeling not knowing for sure what happens. Overall this was a very good book, and I recommend reading them both in the sequel. This book really engaged me and kept me turning pages till the very end! I just found the whole thing a bit daft im afraid.oakley and cole seemed to still be acting like they were 12, professing they loved each other but then not getting round to actually getting together for hsaf the book.
Then there was no duscussion of what would happen after the trial, even though cole was buying a house.spoiler alert. when the evidence came to light after having just been mentioned, I cringed.really?! when the evidence came to light after having just been mentioned, I cringed.really?! Hiw cheesy can you get! And cole being arrested was so unrealistic that even the author gave up with that element of the story within a chapter - why introduce something like that (even though it was ridiculous!) and not do anything with it?
And the constant assertions from cole and jasper that they wiuld kill frank and max we get it! I understand of course that they would feel that way but banging on about it all the time struck of macho-posturing.
This book is the best book I have ever read in my entire life. I am a person who doesn't enjoy sappy love stories where the girl gets the boy etc. But this book blew me away in ways I never expected. The story of why Oakley never speaks (can't say why or it will ruin story) and how much her best friend Cole proves his love to her. I would sit and read this book and hours and hours would pass and I wouldn't even realize how much time I've been reading.

It was so easy to get wrapped up in this book, it was completely and utterly amazing. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, Individual adults A big disappointment of mine was not reading the first book of this. How to describe this book?
The book conveyed a lot of maturity from the lead characters. I fell in love with the book, every girl should have a guy like Cole. It was just about pure and utter love, amazingly beautiful. I was so impressed I am about the same age.
(and buying a house is definitively not on my priority list right no ha) Definitely for summer reading. You'll love it. I read the book Broken Silence by Natasha Preston. I thought that this book was okay. It seemed to drag on in some parts. I really liked the love story that it had. I liked how we got to see Oakley and Cole reconnect after four years of not seeing each other.

Plot: This book started out with Oakley and her family living in Australia. They had moved out there after they found out what Max had did to her. Oakley spent the beginning of the book preparing for her trial.
She was terrified to see her dad again. She also didn't know if she would be ready to see Cole again after four years. After months of preparing, Oakley decided to go back to England for her trial. When she got there, Cole had no idea she was coming back. After four years, he knew he still loved her. Oakley spent two weeks with her lawyer preparing what to say. While this happened, Oakley and Cole spent a lot of time together.
They looked at houses together and went out on a couple dates. They both knew they shouldn't do that because she didn't know what she was doing after the trial.
When the trial finally came, Oakley couldn't handle it. When she saw her dad, she had a panic attack and fainted. The trial had to be delayed because of that.
After they got Oakley in to give her statement, many more girls confessed, too. Her mother was very proud of her for handling things the way she did.
Her father ended up being guilty and was sentenced to life. After that happened, Frank pleaded guilty. He had a shortened sentence. After Oakley thought it was all done, the police arrested Cole for being with a minor.
Oakley had to have everyone possible realize that he wasn't a monster like Max and Frank. Her lawyer, Linda, talked with the police and the charges were dropped. After the trial was done, Oakley and Cole decided to move in together. She was brave enough to stay in England with her family. After a while of living together, Oakley was sick all the time. Cole decided that she needed to take a pregnancy test. The test turned out to be positive and they were both so excited to start that life together.
Characterization: The main character of this book is Oakley. She was very strong throughout the whole book. She didn't let what her father did to her stop her from living the best life possible. She was very nice and very brave.
She knew that she was better than the situation. The minor characters of this book are Cole, Jasper and her mother. Cole never stopped fighting for Oakley. He was very hurt when she left him. When she came back, he loved her with everything he had. He was always there for her.
Jasper made sure Oakley was okay. Whenever he saw that she looked upset, he would ask her what was wrong. He grew stronger throughout the book as well.
He started becoming more mature. Her mother is very sweet. She dealt with her own heartbreak.
She met a guy that would do anything for her. Throughout the book, we see her happiness grow.
Setting: This book takes place in a small town in present time. Oakley worked with everyone to make sure her father was guilty and the charges on Cole were dropped. Oakley knew everyone because of how small the town was.
They all supported her from the beginning. Cole gave Oakley the booth from the ice cream shop they always went to. When the shop got modernized, he couldn't pass up that opportunity. Theme: The theme of Broken Silence is love. After four years of not seeing each other, Oakley and Cole fell in love all over again. Oakley thought that everyone would hate her if she spoke but they showed nothing but support.
Her mom, Jasper, and Cole loved her even more because of that. Oakley and Cole were so in love that they decided to start a life together.
Jasper made sure Oakley was always okay and that's a huge example of love. Recommendation: I recommend this book to any gender ages 15+. I think that 15 is a more mature age to start reading this book. I think anyone younger than that would have a hard time understanding the whole thing. I recommend it to any gender because it shows both perspectives. I think everyone should realize that this is something serious that happens all the time.
Personal response- This book was very enjoyable to read. Every chapter I loved and had meaning. I liked that the book switched from Oakley’s point of view to Cole's view while staying on track with the time.
I had to get used to reading Cole as one of the main characters. At first I saw it and thought of my brother since that was also his name. Thankfully, after a chapter or two, it was easy to see him totally different. Most of the characters were very relatable. I made connections with many of Personal response- This book was very enjoyable to read.

Most of the characters were very relatable. I made connections with many of them, such as Oakley having Jasper, her protective brother. I also related to how she handled many of her dilemmas though the book. Oakley had a strong family bond with her mom and brother in hard times. I related to the family bond with them, and I believe many people could also can relate as well. Plot- Oakley started off in Australia. Oakley, her mom, and her brother moved there after her father was using her for his benefit.
Oakley did not feel safe near there, and wanted to move. Oakley admitted how much it still hurted that she is not with Cole, when she was in Australia.
Oakley left Cole in England when she moved because she felt like it would be the best for him. She loved him way too much to let him ruin his life because of her. What she did not know was by leaving Cole that had ruined him more than anything.
Cole wanted to move with Oakley to Australia. He wanted to be with her but she refused him. Oakley later returned back to England for the court hearing for her father. She planned to go back to Australia after it was over. When she got back her and Cole got the chance and talked over the time she was back, and they had the same strong feelings for each other.
Not Cole nor Oakley had a relationship in the four years they were apart, because they felt it was wrong. Her father had gotten put away for betraying her like he had, and she gets closure. She decided to live with Cole in the house that he had bought. Her family was able to move back by their friends and family.
Characterization- Oakley was the main character. She was sold by her father while she was a minor and went to court against him. She was madly in love with Cole and had become very close with her mom and brother. Oakley left Cole when she left the country.
He met back with her four years later and was still in love with her. Jasper was Oakley's protective brother. He was there for Oakley throughout anything and watched out for her. Linda is Oakley's lawyer. She helped Oakley put her father away for as long as she could.
Linda helped Cole when he got arrested. She got him out of being charged for being with Oakley while underaged. Impacts of setting- The book started off with Oakley in Australia. She was there for four years until she returned to her hometown, England. It took place in modern times, since all of them had cell phones and modern technologies. Cole showed his family to use internet.
It was during summer. Cole was remodeling the house he had bought. Oakley and Cole went to an Ice cream shop open during the summertime. Thematic connection- This book showed a strong theme of everlasting love and closure. After four years of not talking or seeing each other Cole and Oakley were very in love. And Oakley had received closure after the trail's ended and her father went to jail for what he had done to her. Recommendations- I think that It would be a great book for both men and women to read.
Men could closely relate to Cole as women could to Oakley. I believe that anyone from a young adult and older would enjoy and benefit from this book greatly.
I would recommend this book to any of my friends or anyone who loves a great book. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, I think I'm being generous by giving this book 2 stars because it was so boring and annoying to read through.
I think I rolled my eyes in every chapter because of how repetitive everything was. First off, 4 years?! Is it normal for that amount of time to go by before someone goes to trial? That seemed weird. I'm glad that the abuse was finally described somewhat and that the trial ended well. Cole getting arrested was really dumb. I thought it was really unnecessary, in fact, I laughed out loud I think I'm being generous by giving this book 2 stars because it was so boring and annoying to read through.

Things I disliked: 1. I wish Cole was more angry with Oakley when she came back. Seriously, she left him for 4 years and broke his heart! He takes her back like she wasn't in the wrong at all. It would have been better if he was already seeing someone else, so then Oakley could have fought to win him back. Where does Cole work?
It was never mentioned, so I don't even know what he does as an occupation. Clearly it pays well if he was able to buy a house and furnish the place with new furniture. The ending was so rushed. She tells Cole that she doesn't want to stay in Australia (We didn't even get to read about how she came to that decision) and then she moves in with Cole and then all of a sudden she has a centre?
I wish Cole proposed. I know she got pregnant and perhaps that was supposed to satisfy the reader but I would have preferred an engagement. Just like in Book 1, the spelling/grammar in this book was bad. Things I liked.
While I still prefer the first book, Silence, compared to this sequel but. Like what the first book in the series had done previously, the sequel has also - and yet again - tugged at my heart-strings and not to mention messed up all of my emotions. And so did the author's characters. They really messed me up in this one.
But in the best possible way of course. But look, while the book has some grammar mistakes in it etc. And while there was a lot of melodrama in this particular book. I mean whatever. HOWEVER despite all of THAT, I still totally loved this book despite its faults. It's just nice reading a book that makes you keep turning the pages because you're dying to know what's going to happen (even if the book is predictable) and it's been a while since a book has done that too me, so yeah.
I would definitely recommend this book without a doubt in my mind because it's such a great series. The sequel's ending especially was very enjoyable to read. Not to mention the romance will most definitely please the readers.
Trust me on that.;). Like the first book this one had me hooked.
I love reading about Oakley and Cole and all their family. This series covers a very hard topic which some may find hard to read but I think Natasha did this well.it is not written in lots of detail but I would say that it has been written well and not just 'brushed over.' You get a clear picture of what Oakley went through during her childhood but without making it too hard to read. It is an awful topic and Oakley went through hell for sure but Wow!! It is an awful topic and Oakley went through hell for sure but thankfully the people responsible were soon given what they deserved! This series has been brilliant, I have enjoyed the two books so much.Cole is completely swoon worthy, Jasper is silly, funny and ridiculous but very sweet and protective towards his sister where necessary. Highly recommend this series and I'll be going straight on to Jasper's story next!
