I already have prp 3.X and one computer code (Tgg2 I believe?) and don't have that car any longer. I need the computer code for my new car. If that's $50 please send me a pm and I don't mind paying that.

I do, however, mind paying $300 every time and the model for SCT has to change. I'm glad you're (SCT) is listening.TimIf you have a new vehicle and would like to replace the current code on your dongle with access to the new code, the charge is $50 as long as you can submit to us proof of ownership of the new vehicle. In SCT's defense, I have to say that at least they heard our complaint about the policy on additional ECU's, and made a decent attempt to rectify the situation.

I had honestly thought that once that stupid rule was in place, there would be no getting rid of it. Which would have been typical corporate bs. I would caution SCT on getting too much red tape going. That sort of thing can break brand loyalty real quick, as is so evident in this thread.agreed, I am about to buy in with SCT myself as soon as tax money comes back. As indicated in this thread, the main thing we were trying to curtail was Pro Racer packages being used commercially. We weren't intentionally trying to hurt the individuals who were using our PRP's legitimately.

Without making things too complex, like they are now, we figured increasing the price would help to drive away people abusing the product. I have to say I appreciate this option much better though, for the customers at least.

If it requires a little more work on our behalf than at least at the end of the day we have a happy customer that can take advantage of a fair and competitive solution. UPDATE: Michael @ SCT contacted me via phone and we discussed my situation and hopefully we'll get it resolved. I provided all the documentation for my car (registration and pictures of the car) to prove that it's mine and in my name.

Hopefully I'll be back tuning real soon and I'll be sure to update this thread. Thank you Michael and SCT for considering the average Joe trying to tune their own cars! UPDATE: Michael took the time to get me fully back up and running with my $50 update. Thank you Michael and SCT!!!!! Michael, I bought my PRP perhaps 2 years ago. The last time I went to use it, there were several updates, so I kept starting the program to let it do it's updates. At some point, the program seemed to notify me that my dongle would no longer work, and I needed a new one. Apparently some sort of update.

I haven't gotten around to calling SCT and figuring it out yet, since my car isn't running anyway. Could you tell me what's up with the dongle situation, and also if this involuntary update is going to end up costing me money? Michael, I bought my PRP perhaps 2 years ago. The last time I went to use it, there were several updates, so I kept starting the program to let it do it's updates. At some point, the program seemed to notify me that my dongle would no longer work, and I needed a new one. Apparently some sort of update.

I haven't gotten around to calling SCT and figuring it out yet, since my car isn't running anyway. Could you tell me what's up with the dongle situation, and also if this involuntary update is going to end up costing me money?Do you have the black and white one? If so it is no longer supported. You will have to upgrade to the purple one. Well, I got to the bottom of my problems. First off, there was a security update to the Advantage 3 software that required a new dongle. But only if you had the old black and white dongles.

It turned out that upon close inspection, mine was actually black with a little dark blue at the end of it, and a white label. It did not require replacing. There was an update to the software itself, which required me to get a new copy of Advantage 3 from SCT, which they gladly helped me with. That cured the dongle situation. Last, there is a small glitch in the pro racer update software, which made it seem like the software was constantly updating my pcm code.

In reality, what was really happening was I was getting the latest update, then next update it would actually go backwards 1, then update, then go backwards. Endless loop. It's a glitch SCT is working on. The cure was to download it until the pcm code worked, then to disable the automatic update, and quit trying to manually update (at least until they fix the glitch). I guess I must be happy enough with the software.

I just became a SCT dealer/tuner.:-). With SCT, the older Advantage 2.9 depended on a code that was generated based on your computer equipment, and a code generator. A change in equipment, or a desire to load the software in a new computer, created a problem requiring SCT's help. This setup sucked. Advantage 3.0 replaced that method of security with a secure dongle. Now, you can load that software on any computer you want, but it won't work without the dongle. This is a much better setup.

However, the dongle costs you around 25 - 50 bucks. A dongle comes with the Pro Racer Package, when you buy it. If you lose it, I think they replace it for 25. If you want an extra one, I think it costs 50.

There was a change in the dongle/security setup, where the old black and white dongles no longer work with the new security protocols. So, some people did have to buy a new dongle, and trade in their old one. That cost 25. That's the extent of that whole dongle situation. Not really that big of a deal.

What would be a joke is to have to beg someone for software you've already bought to be loaded to a different computer or hardware. SCT has went back and revised the Pro Racer policy (in favor of the racers), so that they can sell their car or something, and switch their racer pcm code to a different code for 50. They can add additional pcm codes for 100.

Both of these things require proof of ownership. If they can't provide proof, then they would have to pay 300. This is a much more reasonable approach that we all can live with. SCT's reason for having started tightening down on additional pcm codes for pro racers was that some Pro Racers were tuning commercially by buying additional codes, instead of buying into the commercial tuning software. I've never had an issue with support from SCT. My issues have always been addressed quickly with both 2.9 and 3.0 Advantage. I find the software very user-friendly and will continue to use their products. The continuous online updates and available value files with 3.0 made it a great improvement over 2.9 software. Dealership and tuning community support has always been great with SCT. I have friends that are currently experimenting with the Sniper software, though I have no experience with it and no intention to change.

I think it's important to put all of these tuning companies into perspective. Most of us think of SCT, Sniper, Diablosport and the like to be some huge companies and to have massive tech support, unlimited time to email replies, etc. In reality, most of these companies were probably started by entrepreneur types with a small amount of money, and a very smart EFI guy. Over time, some of these companies have grown, and aren't so small anymore. But in the end, they're not IBM either. We're lucky to be living in an age this close to the beginning of aftermarket EFI tuning, and already have companies out there cracking codes, making software, and supporting users.

There's only a few of these companies. What if they folded up? We'd by dying to have whatever support we now have. Remember, these guys don't have unlimited staff or budgets (although some companies like SCT are getting bigger and better by the day). I'm not making excuses for any of these companies, but if you guys have any small business experience, you can just imagine how difficult it must have been to be able to make enough money to get one of these tuning companies off the ground the first few years. As for SCT, the above poster was right.

Advantage 3.0 is awesome. Man since when does SCT charge $600.00 for a Racer Package, when they normally go for around $349.00? I know for customers a code now is $300.00, and Dealer's cost is $100.00. I use to pay $75.00 for a code, not anymore everything has gone up. But that's the first time that I've heard of anyone paying $600.00 for a Racer Package, Mike. I know it cost me much more then just $600.00 for the Dealer Software and codes that I have now. But all I do is strictly FORDS, who can afford to keep up with each code SCT supports.

I actually sat down one day because I had a few friends who also had friends, I'm biting my tongue now to say this. He asked if I ever concidered adding GM to my software. It was a quick calculation, and an even quicker answer ( NO!!!!!! The expence to add that on alone for me, was rediculious and way out of the ball park. If you haven't added the code for the Cobra yet, let me know and I'll see what I can do. It's probably a code that I already have, so I'm not sure if I can help, but I'll try, Mike.

I'm a little confused. Where did all that come from??? SCT does not charge $600 for a PRP that I am aware of. Last I checked, suggested retail was $350. And SCT does not sell it to dealers for $100 either:-( A code for a customer would be a Pro Racer Package. To switch vehicles is covered elsewhere in this thread. To update your dealer software, you don't have to buy the codes individually (although you can).

You simply buy one annual update. If you buy enough codes individually to have paid the cost of the annual update, they'll give you the rest of the update for free.

Also, SCT's GM software is recently expanded, and currently on sale (to dealers). Although I think there is still some pretty stiff competition out there on the GM side, for SCT. You might want to talk to SCT and get the whole scoop. I think you might have the wrong idea about costs. Anyone and everyone that has thought about going to SCT or considering buying SCT's products read on. I'll be open and honest up front and let everyone know that I'm pissed. I purchased SCT's Pro Racer package some time ago to do my own tuning on my car.

As some of you know, I traded my GT for my Cobra and now get this, SCT wants $300 to change the code. I realized that I would have to pay something, however, $300 to change a code? Seriously SCT what kind of business model is this? Seems like very unreasonable to me since the original software was $600+ already.

Looks like I'm going to abort the SCT software and find another solution. Thanks SCT you've proven that you ultimately want to stick it to the customer! Cheers, Tim They're not going to change your code, they're going to add a code to your software, Mike. I'm not 100% on this, but I bet if you proved to SCT that you were doing that scenario, they probably would do the same.

Disable your original PCM code access, and enable the new code. While it's taken them a little while to figure out the best way to approach stuff like this, their basic intent has always been to ensure you weren't getting something for nothing. But not to prevent you from getting what you paid for, or nickel diming you. Like anything, it's a process that they've improved on over time. Sometimes it just takes some problems coming up before the problem gets identified and the permanent solution found. This thread illustrates that I think.

Recently, I had a chance to look at the sniper software. One of my customers had really toasted his motor, and I was called in to help figure out what was going on. The motor was screwed up in many ways, and ultimately broken oil pump gears were likely what started a chain reaction of bad things. While it's all but impossible to know for sure, my best guess analysis was that the motor detonated bigtime, and the resulting pressure waves/harmonics might have ultimately manifested in the breaking of the oil pump gears, which led to the total disaster that ensued. When he showed me the sniper software he was using to tune the car himself, I found it to be WAY too generic.

Support

It reminded me of Windows 'wizard' screens. Having worked with plenty of good tuning software, I found it to be unique, and not in a good way. When I left, I wondered to myself if the unusual design of the software contributed to an over-confidence and under-comprehension of the tuning process. Again, just my theory and opinion here.

Also noteworthy is that I think he had a racer-type package, and not a tuner-type package. I just didn't care for the software at all. I have heard that the tech support guys at sniper are always friendly and helpful though. But for the $350 or so that you can get the sct software racer package for. Not worth going in a different direction I think.
